As proof, in 2002 it released madras Walk, a brand featuring GORE-TEX fabrics, then widely used in outdoor gear. Keeping the refined look of a leather shoe while achieving excellent waterproofing and breathability for all-weather wear, it went on to produce one easy-walking, functional model after another.

Today, in pursuit of an even more comfortable fit, the brand also focuses on function. It first turned its attention to function a decade ago, when a rubber sole alone was enough for a shoe to be billed as rainy-day footwear. Arriving at function may partly reflect the trend of the times, but it is no exaggeration to say that madras caught that current earlier than anyone.
Most notable of all is MODELLO, positioned as something of a second line to madras. Its name means “model” in Italian, and it was born in 1990 as a brand more specialized in function, equipped with features such as GORE-TEX fabrics, waterproof leather, and antibacterial, odor-resistant treatments. Then MODELLO Walk, launched at long last in spring/summer 2022, carries the catchphrase “overwhelming function, a first in Japan.” True to that phrase, its functionality is overwhelmingly high even within MODELLO, with features such as a cup insole using the proprietary NEW FINE Plus, which suppresses the growth of bacteria and viruses.
What is more, it uses almost the same sole as a sneaker, so the comfort is beyond reproach, and at roughly 300 g per shoe it is astonishingly light. The basic design is easy to adopt, and the price is more reasonable than madras, making it ideal as an entry model too. With the sneaker boom showing no sign of ending, young people have been drifting away from leather shoes ever faster of late. But MODELLO, which can be worn as casually as a sneaker, may prove to be their savior. And the evolution of the leather shoe, which might be called the mission of this century-old company, will go on.
