If the pieces won't bond well, or when bonding grain-side surfaces, roughen them with a dresser (rasp) or similar tool.
How to bond with solvent-based adhesives (rubber cement, G17, Diabond, etc.)
Apply the adhesive thinly so that it does not squeeze out beyond the bonding surface, and once it has dried a little, press the pieces together so that the edges line up.
