KOBE LEATHER
Chuo-ku, Kobe, HyogoSince 2019
A co-creation brand nurtured together by the city and people of Kobe
The Kobe Leather Cooperative, based in Chuo-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, was established in July 2019. It selects raw hides from Tajima cattle certified as Kobe Beef and manages, under the name "Kobe Leather," leather whose entire process—from hide production to tanning—is completed within Hyogo Prefecture. In 2021 it was certified as a regional collective trademark, the first such certification for leather in Japan. Working together with leather-related businesses and outside designers, it brings the new value of leather born from a single region into many aspects of everyday life.

Kobe Beef leather that honors the gift of life
Commitment 1
"Kobe Beef," regarded as one of the world's finest foods, is a title given only to Tajima cattle that meet strict standards. The Kobe Leather Cooperative ensures that none of this gift goes to waste, selecting only raw hides certified as Kobe Beef and crafting them into leather. By registering a serial number for each animal from the raw hide stage and linking it to the pedigree certificate, the leather's origin can be verified with your own eyes—a rare example anywhere in the world of leather whose makers are fully traceable.

World-class tanning techniques
Commitment 2
Kobe Leather is tanned by artisans in the Himeji and Tatsuno districts of Hyogo Prefecture, which account for 70% of the leather distributed in Japan. The history of their techniques for transforming hides into soft, durable leather dates back a thousand years, and it is said that Oda Nobunaga himself prized their work during the Sengoku period. Through these techniques, still being refined today, we deliver exceptional leather with a rich variety of textures and colors that becomes more beloved the more it is used.

A new form of creation, born from a city united as one
Commitment 3
This is a cooperative that involves the whole city—not only leather-related businesses, but also Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and even local media organizations. Actively welcoming outside ideas and expertise, and partnering with makers from different industries—furniture, bags, leather accessories, household goods, and more—it has brought to life one idea after another that could never have emerged from a single production region alone. Through broad collaboration that engages the entire city, it keeps finding new ways to use local materials and expanding the ways leather can be enjoyed.
