Sumida, TokyoSince 1960
Helping women shine with exceptional quality and taste
Kiyokawa Shoten, whose workshop stands in Azumabashi, Sumida-ku, Tokyo, has been making bags since its founding in 1960, starting out as an OEM manufacturer of formal bags for women. Alongside its factory brand AZZUNI, in 2019 it launched KIYOKAWA, designed by Misaki Matsumura, the founder's granddaughter. Its bags won the Best Product Award in the bag category of the Japan Leather Award, a contest for leather goods made in Japan, two years in a row in 2020 and 2021. Insisting on domestically made materials down to the leather and hardware, the brand delivers bags that accompany women through every scene of their lives.

Designs that suit every occasion and carry each woman's individuality
Commitment 1
Built on modern hues and soft forms, each piece carries its own character while keeping to a simple, refined style. The design work is guided by visions of the many occasions in which a woman will carry the bag, with the hope of widening the choices that bring out her individuality. By shaping each piece one at a time with those imagined women in mind, the brand creates richly expressive items that complement everyday dress.

Beautiful enough to captivate: gussets that speak of masterful craftsmanship
Commitment 2
The tailoring of the gusset has a great influence on how a bag looks. Making a three-dimensional form look beautiful calls for a high level of skill, and whether the appeal of the leather itself can be brought out also rests on the craftsman's hands. While paying close attention to the shape of the gusset and the sculptural form, the bags are tailored simply so that the beauty of the material stands out. The distinctive leather is developed together with a tannery in Himeji: a deep color is layered over a pale base to create gradations of color with real depth. Valuing everyday comfort and durability, the brand pursues a beautiful finish born of masterful craftsmanship.

The brand's own store: experiencing the artisans' handwork up close
Commitment 3
In Azumabashi, Sumida-ku, where the workshop is located, the brand runs its own store with an attached workspace. Visitors can pick up the pieces and feel their texture for themselves, and on business days the designer sometimes serves customers in person, offering an unexpected chance to hear directly about the thinking behind the craft. Items purchased there are maintained free of charge, so customers can keep using them with confidence for years to come. The feedback received at the store every day is carefully put to use in the next round of making.
