The House of Japan Leather

Kiichi

Chuo-ku, Kobe, Hyogo

"Made in Kobe," with a commitment to "made in Japan"

With its main store in the Motomachi shopping street in Chuo-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Kiichi Co., Ltd. has nurtured Kiichi, a leather brand that draws on the leather-making skills of its home city of Kobe, since opening its flagship, STUDIO KIICHI, in 2010. The owner and designer was born into a family that has run a shoe store founded in 1917, and approaches making things while carrying on the leather skills and knowledge cultivated through Kobe shoemaking. Working with tanners in Hyogo's leather-producing regions, the brand develops each of its original leathers one by one, and Japanese artisans craft small leather goods that fit naturally into everyday life.

Original Japanese leather in pursuit of the ideal

Commitment 1

Rather than limiting itself to a single material for its small leather goods, the brand uses several leathers with different characteristics, always in pursuit of the ideal texture and function. There is leather with a soft feel and excellent suppleness; leather whose durability and light resistance have been enhanced through innovative tanning; leather given a vivid, clear translucency through aniline dyeing; and so on, each differing in the origin of the raw hide and the finishing method. By carefully assessing the character of each and incorporating it into its products, the brand broadens the range from which you can choose the one that suits you, according to your tastes and way of life.

Design alive with vivid color and functional beauty

Commitment 2

The starting point for every design is a perspective of vivid color combinations and how closely a piece can follow natural movement. Valuing how it feels in the hand, the brand refines each silhouette through repeated prototyping and carefully polishes the color variations and overall balance. By making fine adjustment after fine adjustment to suit the user's hands and the movements of daily life, it creates designs that achieve both visual beauty and functionality.

Careful craftsmanship woven by the hands and warmth of artisans

Commitment 3

Before a single small leather item is finished, many hands from different generations are involved, from seasoned artisans to young ones. Even after a sample is complete, the brand tries it in actual use, checking the thickness, how well things fit, and the ease of opening and closing one by one, and works with local tanners to develop its original leathers. Rigorous tests such as colorfastness and tear strength are also carried out. By finishing each piece through so many hands, the brand continues to make things that carry warmth along with assured quality.
