The House of Japan Leather

HIRATASYOUTEN

Higashikagawa, KagawaSince 1971

We keep making one-of-a-kind leather gloves.

Hirata Shoten, whose workshop is in Higashikagawa, Kagawa Prefecture, has been making leather gloves by hand since its founding in 1971. The area is known for producing roughly ninety percent of the gloves made in Japan, with sewing skills honed over 120 years. While preserving the techniques of this glove-making region, Hirata Shoten crafts one-of-a-kind gloves one pair at a time in its family-run workshop. Rather than chasing efficiency alone, it will continue to deliver dependable gloves that fit into everyday life through careful craftsmanship.

Made to fit your hands, designed to suit your outfit

Commitment 1

Everyone's hands differ in size and shape, in finger length, and in the thickness of the back of the hand. Ready-made gloves can end up too tight or too loose, so here our artisans examine each customer's hands directly and draft a pattern for that person alone. Stitching that looks beautiful right to the fingertips and a range of colors that pair easily with any outfit reflect the care given to how the gloves look as well as how they feel. We want as many people as possible to experience gloves that feel just right from the moment they slip them on.

Thin, soft construction that is gentle on the skin

Commitment 2

What most determines how comfortable a glove feels is the quality of the leather itself. Thick or stiff leather inevitably leaves a constricting feeling around the hand. Here we select sheepskin tanned and finished in Japan from imported raw hides, judging not only thinness, lightness, and softness but also how the leather is dyed and skived. For the parts that touch the skin, such as the palms and fingertips, we deliberately use smooth, thin material, so the gloves conform to your hands each time you wear them and stay a comfortable favorite for years.

Careful craftsmanship, made possible by small-batch production

Commitment 3

Our gloves are made by skilled artisans gathered in a small, family-run workshop. We cannot produce in large volumes, but in return we never begrudge the time spent on each step of the process. Inheriting from the previous generation the skills rooted in this region, which produces roughly ninety percent of the gloves made in Japan, and passing them on to the next, we value craftsmanship that satisfies the people who use our gloves. Putting quality before efficiency, we will go on carefully making our gloves one pair at a time.
