The House of Japan Leather

Local Materials, Local Craft

Headquartered in Nanyo, Yamagata, Miyagi Kogyo Co., Ltd. has been making leather shoes since its founding in 1941, faithful to traditional methods that give footwear a charm that only deepens with wear. Launched in 2024, Arthful returns to the spirit of the Edo period, when an ecological society was practised as a matter of course through the skill of artisans, and takes "Local Materials, Local Craft" as its guiding idea. Built around domestic materials, a foot shape derived from traditional Japanese footwear, the use of recycled and upcycled materials and a construction designed with repair in mind, the brand brings the wisdom and values of traditional Japanese life into the present day.

Domestic Leather and Other Japanese Materials

Commitment 1

With gratitude for the hides we receive from living creatures, we use Japanese materials such as leather from domestically raised pigs and from wild boar captured under wildlife damage control measures. Scars and vein marks are not avoided but put to use, and each hide is made up by artisans with masterful skill. Pigskin, for example, is hand-dyed one piece at a time after cutting. Even our Black is not a jet black but a greyish black reminiscent of sumi ink, so the texture and grain of the leather emerge beautifully with the play of light. Enjoy the character that comes from surviving in the wild, and a patina that grows richer with the years.

A Fatigue-Resistant Last and a Soft, Gentle Fit

Commitment 2

The last, which determines how a shoe feels on the foot, is derived from the foot shape of traditional Japanese footwear. It eases pressure on the toes while holding the foot firmly from heel to arch, giving a shape that stays comfortable even after hours of wear. Some models are also fitted with a zip, suited to a Japanese way of life in which shoes are taken off and put on many times a day. The insole that meets the sole of the foot is made of Japanese pigskin: lighter than ordinary cowhide, it reduces the overall weight of the shoe, and its high moisture absorbency keeps feet that are prone to sweating dry and comfortable.

In Pursuit of a "Beauty of Use" Built to Last for Years

Commitment 3

The sole has a distinctive design, assembled from small pieces fitted together like a puzzle. These are in fact offcuts of leather and rubber that inevitably arise in shoemaking, put to new use out of the maker's wish not to waste a single scrap of leather. Each piece can be repaired individually, and with regular care the shoes will go on supporting your feet for many years to come. A pair that embodies the spirit of the Edo period, to be worn and loved for years.
