Experience the evolution of Japan leather in the leather districts of Tokyo’s East Side [Day 2]
Both banks of the Sumida River are thriving hubs of craftsmanship. On the east bank, tanneries carry on the art of leather-making, while on the west bank, shoes, bags, and wallets are made. Now enterprising new shops and factories are opening in these old downtown neighborhoods! Make the rounds of the workshops and streets, and the evolution of Japan leather comes into view.
DAY 2
Day 2 heads to the Sumida area on the east bank of the Sumida River. Since Tokyo Skytree opened, new commercial facilities and shops have sprung up amid the retro streetscapes, making for a relaxed stroll. Yakatabune (traditional roofed pleasure boats) and other quintessentially Japanese crafts and charms add to the fun.
10:00 Leather Lab Tokyo
Opened in 2020, this is said to be the first new factory in Sumida-ku in some 20 years, and it actively welcomes visitors. Gleaming new drums greet you on the first floor. The showroom features sheepskin suede in 100 colors, along with a wealth of printed and other design-forward leathers.
The brand uses Goodyear welt construction, which demands a high level of skill from its artisans. Valued for comfort, this method also allows the soles to be replaced, so with regular care the shoes can be worn for years. The lineup also includes sustainable patchwork shoes and women’s styles.
